The village gets its name Possum Bourne from the late, Peter Raymond George "Possum" Bourne (13 April 1956- 30 April 2003) - the New Zealand champion rally car driver - three-time winner of the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship and seven times consecutively Australian Rally Champion, amongst other titles. Peter got his name his nickname, "Possum", when he crashed his mother's car, while trying to avoid a possum in the middle of the road.
